You would think that since the premier league is a product designed for England, English managers would have had success in lifting a couple of trophies, however, that has never happened. Since 1992 when the English topflight was rebranded as the Premier League no single English manager has ever lifted the trophy which is not just a surprising fact but also offers us a great insight into how horrible the coaching standards might be in England.
The best an English Manager has ever finished in the Premier League was second placed Kevin Keegan with Newcastle United in the 1995-96 season. A season that the English man rivaled the Scotsman’s Alex Ferguson for the title race. Newcastle ended up finishing four points shy of the title rivals with 78 points. English managers have been criticized for not lifting the much-coveted trophy. The last English manager to win the First Division Championship as it was called then was Howard Wilkinson who led Leeds United to victory in the 1991-92 season. English managers had won the most Football League First Division championships, with a total of 58, won by 38 different managers at the end of the 1991-92 season, Later in the 1992-93 season it was rebranded to the English Premier League.
Currently, in the 2023-24 season, there are 4 English managers: Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe, Chris Wilder and Gary O’Neil. There are 20 teams in the Premier League, with 16 teams managed by coaches of other nationalities.
To think that it’s a Scotsman, Alex Ferguson, who ruled England for two decades, Yes, you read that right wouldbean understatement. Sir Alex Ferguson won an astonishing 13 trophies in the Premier League Managerial era during his lengthy spell at Manchester United. That’s twice as many as any other manager.
I would largely disagree that coaching in English nation is poor. It is nowhere near to say the least. You should check performances by managers in Championship and how competitive it gets, that should give an idea or two of their quality. Well they have their own flaws but still saying they are poor is a huge understatement.
Even if we talk about championship, The current top three teams, Leeds, Leicester and Ipswitch are currently headed by non English Managers. The fact that no Manager has won EPL makes the “poor coaching” term Justifiable.
