Real Madrid cemented their position as the undisputed kings of European football with a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium. Carlo Ancelotti etched his name even deeper into Champions League folklore, lifting the trophy for a record-breaking fifth time as a manager.

The night belonged to Real Madrid, but for large swathes of the first half, it looked like Borussia Dortmund’s night. Karim Adeyemi squandered two golden opportunities, while Niclas Fullkrug rattled the post with a thunderous strike. Thibaut Courtois, reinstated in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin, stood firm as Dortmund laid siege to the Real Madrid defense.

True to form, however, Real Madrid emerged a different team after the break. Dani Carvajal, a symbol of Real’s resilience, headed home a crucial goal from a corner with 16 minutes remaining. The game was then sealed by Vinicius Jr, who capitalized on a misplaced pass from England’s Jude Bellingham to race clear and slot home. It was a bittersweet moment for Bellingham, who had a stellar season for Real Madrid but found himself on the losing side on the biggest stage.

This victory marked a glorious first season for Bellingham at Real Madrid, but heartbreak for compatriot Jadon Sancho, on loan to Dortmund from Manchester United. Real Madrid’s triumph felt almost preordained, a testament to their unwavering belief and ruthlessness in the Champions League.

Dortmund can hold their heads high despite the defeat. They pinned back the mighty Real Madrid for long periods, only to be undone by their profligacy in front of goal. This was a stark reminder of the fine line between glory and despair in European finals, a lesson learned the hard way by Liverpool and others before them.

The departing Los Blancos veterans, Toni Kroos, Carvajal, Nacho, and substitute Luka Modric, cemented their legendary status with a record-extending sixth Champions League winners’ medal. Meanwhile, the ever-impressive Carlo Ancelotti continued his incredible reign at the helm of Real Madrid.

Dortmund fans, renowned for their fervent support, created a vibrant atmosphere at Wembley. They roared their team on throughout the game, and their team responded with a valiant display. Despite the disappointment, the traveling supporters acknowledged the valiant effort with a thunderous ovation at the final whistle.

For Borussia Dortmund, the result will leave a bitter taste, a reminder of the one that got away. Coach Edin Terzic will surely ponder the “what ifs” as he reflects on a night of missed opportunities at Wembley.
